What your body is saying this monthLo que tu cuerpo te dice este mes

Your body does a different job in January than it does in July. Cold squeezes your vessels; heat borrows your blood volume; pollen steals your sleep; a long flight switches off the pump in your calves. Here is the whole year — what's changing around you, what your body is doing about it, the signals worth listening to, and the ones that mean call 911.

What's changing around youQué cambia a tu alrededor

Cold air, short days, less walking, and holiday eating habits that haven't quite let go.Aire frío, días cortos, menos caminatas y hábitos de comida navideña que todavía no se han ido.

What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

To protect your core temperature, cold makes the blood vessels near your skin narrow. Narrower pipes, same amount of blood — so pressure rises. Studies of home readings consistently find blood pressure running several points higher in winter than in summer. Your heart is also doing more work for the same shovel of snow or the same walk to the car.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • Home readings a few points higher than in July. Often just the season — but the pattern is genuinely useful information to bring your doctor.
  • Cold, pale, aching hands and feet.Manos y pies fríos, pálidos y adoloridos. Normal narrowing for most people. If fingers turn white, then blue, then red with cold, that's a pattern worth describing to your doctor.
  • Getting winded sooner on a cold-air walk. Cold plus exertion is a bigger ask of the heart and airways than the same effort in May.Frío más esfuerzo es una exigencia mayor para el corazón y las vías respiratorias que el mismo esfuerzo en mayo.

Three small movesTres movimientos pequeños

  1. Keep measuring and writing it down. A winter-vs-summer comparison is one of the most useful things you can hand a doctor.
  2. Warm up indoors before heavy outdoor work, and cover your mouth and nose so the air you breathe in is warmer.
  3. Keep moving indoors — your calf muscles are the pump that keeps blood from pooling in your legs all winter.
Chest pressure, tightness, or heavy arm, neck, or jaw discomfort while shoveling snow or working in the cold means call 911 (or your local emergency number) right then — not after you finish, and not the next morning. Don't drive yourself. No manejes tú.

The coldest weeks in much of the country, respiratory viruses circulating hard — and, fittingly, American Heart Month.

What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

An infection is whole-body inflammatory work. Fever speeds your heart by roughly ten beats for every degree Fahrenheit, fluids shift, and blood becomes a little more prone to clotting. Research shows cardiovascular risk stays elevated for weeks after a serious respiratory infection — which is why, for people with heart or lung disease, "just the flu" is never just the flu.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • A cough still hanging on two or three weeks after the fever went. Common after a viral infection while the airway lining rebuilds. If it's getting worse rather than better, that's a call to your doctor.
  • Feeling your heart pound while you have a fever.Sentir el corazón latir fuerte mientras tienes fiebre. Usually the fever itself, and it usually settles as the fever does.
  • Breathless on stairs you normally handle fine. A new, real change in what you can do is worth a same-week call — don't file it under "getting old."Un cambio nuevo y real en lo que puedes hacer merece una llamada esa misma semana — no lo archives como "me estoy poniendo viejo".

Three small movesTres movimientos pequeños

  1. Ask your doctor which vaccines apply to you this season — that's a decision for the two of you, based on your age and health.
  2. Treat rest as physiological work, not laziness. Recovery is something your body is actively doing.
  3. Keep fluids up while feverish — you lose more water than you notice through breathing and sweating.
Trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, or sudden face droop, arm weakness, or slurred speech — call 911 (or your local emergency number) now. Don't wait to see whether it passes, and don't drive yourself.

Tree pollen arrives weeks before most people expect it, and the clocks move.

What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

Your immune system releases histamine at the nasal lining, which swells the tissue and floods it with clear fluid. That's why allergy season steals your sleep before it steals your day: a blocked nose at 2 a.m. costs you deep sleep, and short sleep in turn nudges blood pressure, appetite, and mood in the wrong direction. The tell that separates allergy from infection is simple — allergy itches and doesn't bring fever.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • Itchy eyes and nose, clear runny nose, no fever. That combination is the classic allergy pattern rather than an infection.
  • Morning headache and a bone-dry mouth. Usually a night spent breathing through your mouth because your nose was blocked.
  • Waking tired after a full eight hours.Despertarte cansado tras ocho horas completas. Time in bed isn't the same as sleep quality — fragmented sleep leaves the same fatigue as short sleep.

Three small movesTres movimientos pequeños

  1. Shower and change clothes after time outdoors — pollen rides indoors on hair and fabric and then spends the night on your pillow.Dúchate y cámbiate de ropa después de estar afuera — el polen entra en el pelo y la tela y luego pasa la noche en tu almohada.
  2. Keep bedroom windows shut on high-pollen days and let the air conditioning do the filtering.
  3. Ask your pharmacist which over-the-counter options fit you and your other medicines — some interact, and some are sedating.
Wheezing, chest tightness, or real difficulty breathing is never "just allergies." If breathing is hard, or you can only speak in short broken phrases, call 911 (or your local emergency number).

The first warm weekend, and with it the first yard work, the first long walk, the first game.

What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

Muscle adapts in days. Tendon, ligament, and cartilage adapt in weeks — they have far less blood supply. That mismatch is the entire reason spring is injury season: your enthusiasm is running on muscle time. Meanwhile your calf muscles, the "second heart" that squeezes blood back up out of your legs, are finally being switched on again after a sedentary winter.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • Stiff and sore on the second day, spread over a whole muscle. The ordinary delayed soreness of doing something new. It fades with gentle movement.
  • Sharp pain in one exact spot that gets worse every session. A different thing entirely from soreness — worth stopping and asking about.
  • Both ankles puffy by evening after a day on your feet. Common and usually gravity. Swelling in only ONE leg is a different story — see the red flag below.

Three small movesTres movimientos pequeños

  1. Raise your activity gradually — roughly a tenth more per week — instead of doubling it on the first nice Saturday.
  2. Walk daily. Nothing else you can do for free moves blood out of your legs as well.Camina a diario.
  3. Put your legs up above heart level for fifteen minutes at the end of a long day.
Swelling, pain, warmth, or redness in one calf — especially after illness, surgery, or a long trip — can be a deep-vein clot. Get medical care the same day. If you also have sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, or you cough up blood, call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately and don't drive yourself. What's changing around youQué cambia a tu alrededor

Warm afternoons, far more skin exposed, and UV levels climbing toward their summer high.

What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

Warmth does the opposite of cold: vessels near the skin widen to release heat, so blood pressure often reads a little lower in late spring than it did in January, and standing up quickly can leave you briefly light-headed. Up on the surface, ultraviolet light is doing something slower and more permanent — sunburn is a genuine injury to skin cells, and the damage adds up across a lifetime rather than resetting each winter.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • Home readings lower than your winter ones. Often seasonal. Bring the pattern to your doctor — never adjust a medicine yourself because of the weather.
  • A mole that is changing, or that looks unlike all your others. Changing size, shape, colour, or a new itch or bleed — get it looked at rather than watching it for a year.
  • A grey, swimmy moment when you stand up fast. Blood taking a second to catch up against gravity. Frequent or worsening episodes deserve a mention to your doctor.

Heat arrives, and your heart takes an extra shiftLlega el calor, y tu corazón hace un turno extraThis monthEste mes

What's changing around youQué cambia a tu alrededor

The first real heat of the year — the stretch your body hasn't acclimatised to yet, which is exactly when heat illness is most common.

What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

Cooling you down costs two things: blood and water. Your body sends blood out to the skin to shed heat, and sweats fluid and salt away to evaporate it. That leaves less volume returning to your heart, so it beats faster to keep the same amount moving. On a hot day your cardiovascular system is quietly working a second job on top of whatever else you're doing.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • Dark yellow urine, and less of it.Orina amarilla oscura, y menos cantidad. The simplest hydration gauge you own — pale straw is the target for most people.
  • Heavy sweating with muscle cramps.Sudoración intensa con calambres musculares. Fluid and salt going out faster than they're coming back in. Get to shade and cool down.Líquido y sal saliendo más rápido de lo que entran. Busca sombra y refréscate.
  • Dizzy when you stand after time in the heat. It's a signal to stop, not to push through.

Three small movesTres movimientos pequeños

  1. Drink steadily through the day rather than all at once when you finally notice you're thirsty.
  2. Move hard exercise to early morning or evening for the first couple of weeks of real heat.
  3. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how heat affects your particular medicines — several common ones change how you sweat or hold fluid. What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

In real heat the small vessels in your legs relax, pressure inside them rises, and fluid seeps out into the tissue. Doctors call the result heat edema, and in a healthy person it's usually harmless and gone by morning. Alcohol pushes the same process from two sides — it widens vessels further and makes your kidneys shed water — which is why a hot evening plus a few drinks shows up in your socks the next day.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • Shoes and rings tight by evening, fine again by morning. The typical pattern of heat swelling — symmetric, both sides, and it resolves overnight.
  • Swelling that does NOT go down overnight.Hinchazón que NO baja durante la noche. That's a different pattern from heat edema and deserves a prompt call to your doctor.

What's changing around youQué cambia a tu alrededor

Peak travel season: long flights, long drives, airport days, and far more hours sitting still than usual.

What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

Blood only leaves your legs when your calf muscles squeeze it upward. Sitting still switches that pump off, blood slows in the deep veins, and in some people it clots — the reason travel-related clots earned the nickname "economy class syndrome." Risk climbs with journeys over roughly four hours and rises further with dehydration, recent surgery, pregnancy, cancer, a previous clot, and some medicines.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • Both legs and feet heavy and tight after a long flight, easing once you walk. Ordinary pooling from hours of stillness.Estancamiento común por horas de quietud.
  • ONE calf swollen, painful, warm, or discoloured.UNA pantorrilla hinchada, dolorosa, caliente o descolorida. Not the same thing at all. See the red flag below. No es en absoluto lo mismo. Mira la señal de alarma abajo.

School and work restart, sleep schedules snap back, ragweed pollen peaks, and viruses start moving between classrooms.

What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

Late September is a documented spike in asthma flare-ups in many countries, and the reason is simple stacking: pollen at its yearly peak arrives exactly as respiratory viruses start circulating in schools. Airways that could handle either trigger alone are being asked to handle both at once — which is why a flare can arrive in someone who has been stable for months.

Take away evening light and that clock drifts, which changes sleep timing, appetite, and for some people mood. Add fewer daily steps and heavier food, and blood pressure begins its slow climb back toward its winter number — a rise most people never notice because nothing hurts.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • A hard pull toward carbohydrates in the late afternoon. A very common seasonal pattern — worth naming rather than judging.
  • Going to bed later while still waking at the same time. Sleep debt accumulates quietly and shows up as afternoon fatigue weeks later.
A seasonal pattern is real, recognisable, and treatable — describe it to your doctor rather than waiting it out alone.

Three small movesTres movimientos pequeños

  1. Get daylight on your face within an hour of waking — it's the strongest and cheapest signal your body clock has.
  2. Have the vaccination conversation with your doctor now, while it's a calendar item and not an emergency.
  3. Decide your indoor winter walking plan before the weather forces the question.
If low mood becomes hopelessness, or you have thoughts of harming yourself, you are not alone and this is treatable. In the U.S., call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) right away — and if you are in immediate danger, call 911 (or your local emergency number).

Big meals, restaurant and packaged food, travel, disrupted routines, and more alcohol than usual.

What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

Salt holds water. A single very salty meal can keep an extra pound or two of fluid on board for a day or two — enough to swell ankles and nudge blood pressure upward. Alcohol has its own trick: a heavy drinking session can set off an irregular heart rhythm even in people with healthy hearts. Doctors named it decades ago, and the name stuck — holiday heart syndrome.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • Rings and shoes tight the day after a big meal. Usually the salt, holding water. It typically settles over a day or two.Normalmente es la sal, reteniendo agua. Suele asentarse en uno o dos días.
  • A fluttering, racing, or skipping heartbeat after a heavy drinking night. Tell your doctor even if it stopped on its own — that episode is information they want.
  • Two or three pounds heavier overnight. Fat doesn't move that fast — that's fluid. A sudden jump that keeps climbing is worth reporting.

Three small movesTres movimientos pequeños

  1. Taste before you salt. Most of the sodium in a holiday meal was already added before it reached the table.
  2. Alternate every alcoholic drink with water — it slows the evening down in more ways than one.
  3. Protect your medicine routine through travel and time changes with a phone alarm rather than memory. Never change a dose yourself — ask your doctor or pharmacist.

A racing or irregular heartbeat together with chest pain, fainting, or shortness of breath — call 911 (or your local emergency number). Don't wait for it to settle on its own, and don't drive yourself.

What your body is doing about itQué hace tu cuerpo al respecto

Studies of death certificates find that cardiac deaths peak between Christmas and New Year's Day — every year, and in warm states too, which tells us the cold is not the whole story. The rest is human: routines break, medicines get missed, symptoms get explained away, and people delay seeking care so they don't ruin the holiday for everyone else. That delay is the dangerous part.

What your body is sayingLo que tu cuerpo te dice

  • You catch yourself explaining a symptom away.Te descubres justificando un síntoma. "It's the food, it's the stress, it's nothing" — that explaining-away is itself the warning sign this month."Es la comida, es el estrés, no es nada" — esa justificación es, en sí misma, la señal de alerta de este mes.
  • Doses skipped because the pharmacy was closed.Dosis saltadas porque la farmacia estaba cerrada. Gaps in a regular medicine are worth solving in advance, not improvising around.
  • Chest discomfort you would have taken seriously in March. The calendar changed. Your arteries didn't.El calendario cambió. Tus arterias no.

Three small movesTres movimientos pequeños

  1. Refill every regular medicine before the holiday week, and check what's open where you're travelling.
  2. Keep some version of your normal routine — a daily walk survives a holiday better than a full plan does.
  3. Tell one person in the house what your warning symptoms would look like, so someone else can call for you.
Chest pressure or pain, shortness of breath, a cold sweat, or stroke signs — face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty — mean call 911 (or your local emergency number) immediately. There is no bad day of the year to call. Don't wait until after the holidays, and don't drive yourself or let someone drive you.

Because your body isn't a fixed machine — it's constantly adjusting to what's around it. Knowing what it's adjusting to makes its signals readable instead of frightening.

A note on how to read this.Una nota sobre cómo leer esto. Seasonal patterns come from population research — they describe what tends to happen across large groups of people over a year. They cannot tell you what is happening in your body, and this calendar never tries to. Northern-hemisphere months are used throughout; if you live south of the equator, read the season rather than the month name. Nothing here replaces your own doctor, and nothing here should ever change a medicine you take. In an emergency, call 911 (or your local emergency number).
